From Thailand: Psilocybe Samuiensis

The Ps. Samuiensis (pronounced as Sah-moo-ee-en-sis) originates from Thailand and was first discovered in 1991 by entheomycologist John Allen. The elusive Samuiensis stayed hidden for almost 11 years before it was rediscovered in abundance growing on the island of Koh Samui, Thailand in the summer of 2001. We have exclusive video footage of that rediscovery which is truly exciting to watch. But first a few words from Mushroom John Allen about the island of Koh Samui and their mushroom hunts.
Koh Samui (pronounced as Koh Sah-moo-ee) is situated in the Gulf of Siam about 60 km from the coast of southern Thailand. IT is one of about 60 islands, of which only about six are inhabited by humans, located in the Marine Ang Thong National Park archilpelego.

It is a tropical island of exotic moods. Like a giant rice paddie this island has no fences, except many buffalo arenas where the Chao Samui (Samui folk) have buffalo fights. These arenas are also home to several kinds of mushrooms, of which Psilocybe Samuiensis is one of many species found in this tropical paradise..

There are also P. cubensis, P. subcubensis, and several varieties of Copelandia.

In the North of Thailand in the region of Lanna Thai (Changmai) is another cool weather species of Psilocybe, as yet unidentified, which resembles Psilocybe cyanescens and some of the Australia species .

There are exotic fruits such as lamyai, Longsat, Durian, Rambutan, Mancoot (Mangostein), Mangos, Papayas, etc. Beautiful women, Music and partying every night, Unbelievable warm water, Humongous Buddhas, craftsman and artists. The mushrooms there grow in rice paddies and they are all open to any who walk in them. Of course there are cobras there and other sneaky snakes, monkeys, elephants, girls and good food. We tour the island and hunt for the elusive shrooms and look forward to the Full Moon Festival where the psilocybe mushrooms prevail.
The bungalows are nice and affordable and I take four to six people on a 17 day tour. This includes visiting the Ancient City, 9 days at Koh Samui, four days at Angkor Wat in the jungles of Xiem Riap, Cambodia. a few days in Bangkok hunting and partying Enjoy a personal visit to the King's Private Gardens at the Royal Palace.

Now that you have a feel for the environment and fun they have lets share some more about the ps. samuiensis.

While the girl in the video is a local, she is an educated local who loves edible mushrooms. It was she who, along with other traveling companions who first observed the Psilocybe samuiensis growing in the fields near the muslim village of Ban Hua Thanon.

Her and others, upon finding this small mushroom, immediately went driving down one of the highways on Koh Samui, rambling along in search of my whereabouts.

I had just left the temple Wat Khunaorum, where they have a mummified monk who mummified himself. He is in an enclosed glass partition protected from the elements of air and bacteria. He actually predicted his death and then went in to a state of meditation and mummified himself.

I had just said a Buddhist prayer to Khunaorum and another traveling companion named Travis (thats the hand holding the P. cubensis to my hand holding the Psilcybe samuiensis) and I went zipping down hoghway 4169. After about 15 km down the road I noticed that my backpack which had all of my money (travelers checks), passport, airline tickets, etc., were not in my basket on the mortor cycle.

All of a sudden a rented jeep pulls in right behind where Travis and I had stopped on the highway, and there were two of our other traveling companions honking at us. They told me that they may have just found a batch of Psilocybe samuiensis and wanted me to come with them to verify the identity.

Well I told them what happened and we immediately drove back towards the fields, first stopping at monastery, where, fortunately for me, a monk had found my backpack and sat there waiting for me to come back and retrieve it. Some tourist had almost walked away with it and the monk, with who I had talked to after my ealier prayer protected my pack. I left a large donation and the monk gave me that bracelet in the photo posted below. Then my companions and I returned to the field where I confirmed the identity of this mushroom. They grew for a few days and were gone for another year most likely. It is possible that this species could grow twice a year, but one would have to stay there for that length of time to find them again.
This collection of samuiensis was found about 20 to 30 rice paddies away from the two original paddies where I discovered the psilocybe samuiensis in 1991.
It was in this field with these brauma's (thai buffalo's) that the ps. samuiensis and The Hawks Eye original koh samui classic cubensis was revealed. The Hawks Eye helped fund the trip for one of these traveling companions. Why? To help better the world of psilocybe mushroom enthusiast. We thought you might need a little taste of Thai :)

psilocybe samuiensis next to psilocybe cubensis

BTW, psilocybe samuiensis is the only species grown outside of Mexico which is directly related to Psilocybe mexicana.

Are you ready for some awesome video footage of the rediscovery of the ps.samuiensis?
This video footage is no professional production. These are just ametuer mushroom hunters having fun and we sent one along with our video camera to film some of the fun and collect spores :).
This is a rather big file 48megs. It is about 4 minutes and 48 seconds of raw Ps. Samuiensis footage in Thailand. Depending on your connection speed, this could take 2 minutes or 30 minutes to d/l but well worth it. It is in MPEG1 format, so RIGHT CLICK on it, then "save target as" to save file to hard drive first. Then play it back by double clicking on it from your file folder (whereever you saved it to). This is not a streaming video, so you must save it this way to view it. MPEG1 format is a very common codec installed on most computers with newer versions of Windows. If by chance you d/l it and it does not play, simply download the MPEG1 codec here and double click it for the self installer. Enjoy!

Summer 2001 Rediscovery of the Ps. Samuiensis Video

Wasn't that cool? More videos coming later of ps. cubensis hunting in Thailand. So of course our friends in Thailand sampled the goods....the mummified monk sent them the vibe and you dont want to dis a mummified monk.! So what did they say.... the samuiensis are fantastic! Very smooth and made them all extremely giddy...and they said they are stronger then cubies!
GREAT !! so how do they grow them in Thailand? Well of course God and the brauma buffalos handle most of the work. But since they are hard to find at times, a Thai friend,Feito, told us a little secret he used.
Brauma, horse, buffalo, or cow dung mixed 50/50 with soft woodchips. Spawned with rice style cakes- with 50/50 BRF/ grass seed ground to flour. Colonized in a large filter-bag. Dug it out, put in a gargage bag, spread out into a box, and forgot about it. Cased a week later with coir/vermic/lime. Aggresive yet delicate, these came up about 2 weeks after casing. Its said in Thailand if you can grow panaeolus species you can grow these as they can be treated similiar. A nice picture from Feito's porch in Thailand of his ps. samuiensis experiment.Notice how much bigger they get when cultivated instead of just hanging out in the rice field waiting for a buffalo to shit on them :)

Well we hope you enjoyed the education on the ps. samuiensis. Oh wait.. one last treat. While on that expedition, Mushroom John Allen also discovered another new psilocybe species. He has delicately named it psilocybe violacea! Very beautiful name John. And once more... a nice photo courtesy of John Allen of his new discovery the psilocybe violacea. She's pure beauty!
